Tip #1: Plan Ahead

When looking to transform your kitchen, spend time planning before you seek out a contractor. Having a clear idea of our vision ensures you know what you want, can help you choose the right contractor and safeguards against straying from your budget. Creating a Pinterest board is helpful in determining the design and layout, but also answer the following questions of yourself:

  • What are my goals/needs for this kitchen remodel?

  • What is my budget?

  • What aspects of the kitchen do I want to allocate more of my budget to?

  • Which kitchen appliances and technology should I incorporate?

  • What type of kitchen layout do I prefer and which works best for my needs?

  • What color scheme will serve our home now and in the future?

  • How much natural light do I want?

  • Do I want to incorporate any sustainable features into the kitchen?

  • Will I implement accessibility measures?

Tip #2: Research Your Contractor

Next comes finding a qualified contractor. Your contractor is arguably the most pivotal aspect of your remodel. They’re going to spend weeks or months in your home making your vision become a reality. You want someone you can trust and connect with. You want a contractor who gets your vision and understands the best way(s) to construct it. You also want a contractor who is licensed, insured and has expertise in the area so they can legally handle all permits and construction.

Conduct research by Googling recommended contractors. Check the amount of time they’ve been in business, their areas of expertise, customer reviews, license number, awards they’ve won and images of previous work. Schedule interviews with several general contractors to determine their process, communication plan, cost and if they’re the right fit for you.

Tip #3: Think About Functionality & Quality Over Decoration

It’s easy to get swept away with the latest design trends, but sometimes they just don’t work for your family’s needs. Ensure your choices are efficient and effective for cooking, dining and entertaining with your family and friends in the short- and long-term. One functional change, for instance, is an alteration to the layout to enhance your workflow and traffic flow.

In addition to function, it’s important to think about quality. Opt for low-maintenance, high-quality products that come with long warranties. Although some more durable items may come with a higher price tag, they typically pay off in the long run. Higher quality products will last longer and can even increase home value if you sell down the road.
