The City of Los Angeles’ Pre-Approved ADU Plans

The ADU Standard Plan Program offers ADU designs that make it cheaper and faster to build an accessory dwelling unit.


An ADU Plan Recently Approved by The City of Los Angeles

Here at South Land Remodeling, we’re thrilled with the recent news from the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS). Mayor Garcetti announced the LADBS launched over two dozen pre-approved ADU plans, an initiative dubbed the ADU Standard Plan Program. Now accessory dwelling unit builders, contractors and homeowners can use these ADU designs to acquire a permit much faster and for less money.


In fact, this ADU program shortens the permit review process from 4-6 weeks to as little as one day! Equally exciting is that these flexible plans are designed to suit most residentially zoned properties, and the options range from studios to 2-story ADU plans.

Various Styles of Approved ADU Designs & Floor Plans


Broadly speaking, the ADU Standard Plan Program aims to help offset Los Angeles’ housing crisis to create more affordable housing options. The goal is these pre-approved ADU floor plans and designs make it easier for homeowners to design and build such a structure on their existing property. The ADU (also known as a “granny flat”) then creates more living space and lifestyle options, including creating a home office as well as the possibility to convert it into a rental unit for additional income.


Mayor Garcetti said, “This program is about making ADUs more accessible, more affordable, and more beautiful—and making them part of the blueprint of our efforts to tackle our housing crunch and create more affordable communities citywide.”


The Approved ADU Standard Plans

Currently there are 28 ADU standard plans from which to choose. Each one ranges in style, functionality and size (200-1,200 sq ft). All the ADU plans are for detached ADUs and include the complete design for the unit’s exterior and interior.
